Recent Accomplishments

Below are some highlights of TBHL's accomplishments in the past two years -- with a staff of only three health educators and one researcher/policy analyst. Our goal in the upcoming period is to increase the community's involvement in how we develop and implement programs, to give voice to their strengths and assets, and to work with community residents and on their behalf to improve the health and well-being of the borough's people.

Health Education/Promotion

  • Conducted 173 health promotion workshops in English and Spanish, reaching 2088 community residents
  • Distributed over 23,000 pieces of health promotion items
  • Organized Community Health Education Day, at which over 75 organizations distributed health information to over 300 community residents.
  • Published and distributed 10,000 copies of a resource guide of services for parents and babies in the Bronx in English, Spanish, French and Bangla (PDF copies available here)

Conferences and Trainings

  • Sponsored conferences and trainings for professionals and consumers on:
    • Drug Use, Pregnancy, and Parenting (report of proceedings available here)
    • H1NI (swine flu) and pregnant women
    • Sudden Unexpected Infant Deaths
    • Lead Poisoning and Pregnancy
    • Pregnant Women and the Criminal Justice System
    • Health Care Reform and the Bronx
    • Medicaid Redesign and Reproductive Health Care
    • Health Care for the LGBT Community

Community Research

  • Conducted focus groups on:
    • Mexican Women and Obstacles to Prenatal Care (report here)
    • Lesbians and Pregnancy
    • Teenagers' access to health care
    • Community Perceptions of Health Research
    • Community Perceptions of Prenatal Care
    • Community Perceptions and Knowledge of Genetics
  • Surveyed more than 200 Bronx residents and workers on environmental health issues. 

 Policy and Advocacy

  • Submitted testimony:
    • to the City Council against proposed budget cuts in Infant Mortality Reduction Initiative, children's dental clinics, and other vital public health programs 
    • to the Governor's Minority Health Council for steps to increase racial/ethnic diversity among health professionals
    • to the Governor's Medicaid Redesign Team on steps to increase access to care
    • to a State Senate committee on measures to reduce obesity and increase food security.

Recent Awards

  • 2009 - Marshall England Memorial Public Health Award from the Commission on the Public's Health System to the Child Health Initiative Team of The Bronx Health Link
  • 2009 - Citation of Merit from Bronx Borough President Rubin Diaz Jr. for production of Community Health Education Day
  • 2010 - Breastfeeding-Friendly Employer Award from the NYC Breastfeeding Leadership Committee for "exemplary support for working mothers to breastfeed their babies" and for "assuring the rights of nursing mothers in the workplace."
